The Subjection of Women and Slavery Essay - 1201 Words
In this first unit, one of the readings that really caught my attention was John Stuart Millââ¬â¢s The Subjection of Women. In his essay, Millââ¬â¢s presents a very compelling argument that the subordination of one sex to another is wrong and that there should be instead, perfect equality amongst the sexes. Having previously studied about gender inequality issues from another class, I have a broad understanding of how and why gender inequality has been perpetuated through various historical, political, and social contexts. Incorporating this knowledge as well as information learned through the readings and lectures, I hope to share my thoughts on the subjection of women and its relationship to slavery in this personal response paper. As anâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Women were always seen as being inferior or ââ¬Å"weakâ⬠to men; that they couldnââ¬â¢t do the same things men did because they lacked the physical strength to do so. Because women were physically inferi or, it became easy to oppress them due to this difference in power. Throughout history, women were ââ¬Å"conditionedâ⬠to believe that it was their duty to be obedient to men. That it was their ââ¬Å"nature to live for othersâ⬠¦.and to have no life but their [menââ¬â¢s] affectionsâ⬠(Mill, 1995, pg.16). Thus, it seemed natural that women were to be subservient to the needs of the men in their lives. They gave up their lives in order to serve and be accepted by them. Mill, however, claims that this was not the case. The subjection of women was not brought upon by natural development, but rather, through customary power relationships that went on to become institutionalized in the same way that slavery was. Although the subjection of women arose the same way as slavery and other forms of oppression, it differs from the fact that it does not occur by the rule of force but rather, by voluntary acceptance (Mill, 1995, pg.16). Social Inequality Reaction Paper Yingtian Wang The United States is certainly a culturally diverse society, as we live in this world. Age, gender, race, wealth, education and social connection are some of the diverse parts in society that creates stratification. What is social inequality? The short definition is that resources in a society are unevenly distributed according to different ââ¬Å"categoriesâ⬠of people. For example, the wealth distribution in the United States shows that the top 10% people have 70% of the wealth of the country. The bottom 20% people only has about 3% of wealth. The multi-color piano keys represent the different bases that are in DNA and RNA molecules. What is different in the second strand than the first upper strand is that the second strand is mRNA which contains the base Uracil while the first strand is DNA and contains Thymine instead of Uracil. The difference between the second strand and the ââ¬Å"guitarsâ⬠is that the second strand is mRNA which are codons while the ââ¬Å"guitarsâ⬠are tRNA and are anticodons. The difference in the sequence between the first strand and the ââ¬Å"guitarsâ⬠is that the first strand is triplets which contain Thymine and the ââ¬Å"guitarsâ⬠are anticodons and instead of Thymine, they contain Uracil. The process going from the second strand to the ââ¬Å"guitarsâ⬠is called translation.
